TikTok is entering the world of gaming

TikTok is a video-sharing application, especially popular among younger demographers, has more than a billion active users and is expected to have a turnover of around 11 billion dollars this year. The app is owned by Chinese firm ByteDance and was originally launched in 2016 before rebranding and global launch in 2017, since when it has exploded in popularity to the point that it has been questioning Google as the world’s most popular website for days.

Microsoft says it has over 3 billion gamers worldwide. He wants to embrace them all, and some other giants of the entertainment industry want them all. Netflix has already offered mobile games within the subscription, and now TikTok has knocked on the door of the gaming market.

According to Reuters, this video-sharing application has already started testing some HTML5 games in Vietnam, such as Zyng’s Disco Loco. TikTok plans to expand its gaming business to other countries in Southeast Asia later this year.

Over a billion potential players

And while Disco Loco is just an ordinary mini-game, according to Reuters, TikTok plans to deliver more complex games in the future and will monetize them through commercials. “We are always looking for ways to enrich our platform, regularly testing new opportunities and integrations,” is a brief official comment from the Chinese company.

“We’re always looking at ways to enrich our platform and regularly test new features and integrations that bring value to our community,” the representative said in an emailed statement to Reuters. The Chinese version of TikTok named Douyin has been offering games in that market since 2019, and with over a billion active users a month, it is quite clear that there is definitely potential for more casual games between the two videos.

The conclusion is not that TikTok will do games – after all, it has been doing that on its domestic market for years. It’s about the company behind it seeing games as one of the great ways it can include and keep its huge base of players on the platform.
