Authorities have responded to a crash that has been determined to be fatal and has closed down the Old Island Highway just north of Courtenay Wednesday afternoon.
The accident occurred along Highway 19A near Merville, leading to a quick response from BC Emergency Health Services, BC RCMP and the Oyster River Fire Department.
A 28-year-old woman has died as a result of the incident and the BC Coroners Service is currently on the scene as a result.
Another man in his 20s was taken to hospital as a result of the crash.
RCMP believes that one car, driving in the northbound direction, crossed over the center line along Highway 19A as part of the incident, hitting the female driver’s vehicle.
Both cars ended up in the ditch alongside the road.
The 28-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
RCMP says that both victims were local to the area.
A photo from the scene appeared to show two vehicles, including a black SUV, in a ditch on the side of the highway, with debris strewn on the road.
According to authorities, the road is expected to be closed until approximately 8 pm on Wednesday.
